Stephen Welsh is more than capable of earning a call-up to Scotland’s 2026 World Cup squad, according to Motherwell teammate Paul McGinn.

Welsh returned to Motherwell on deadline day after briefly returning to Celtic to help cover for the lack of central defensive options.

It has been a triumphant return to Fir Park for the Hoops academy graduate too, with Welsh scoring against Rangers and then providing an assist against Aberdeen.

A run of good form could secure him a place in Steve Clarke’s squad, and McGinn thinks he is capable of doing so.

Will Stephen Welsh ever play for Celtic again?

Stephen Welsh could go to World Cup with Scotland

The 26-year-old has 10 caps for the national team but is being tipped to add to those this summer in the USA, Canada and Mexico.

McGinn told SunSport: “For me, he definitely does have the ability to play international football.

“And from what I’ve read, it looks like there’s going to be a few extra places available for this World Cup.

“I think sometimes it’s hard to get in, because the manager has had his trusted players that he relies on.

“But he’ll need to take a few extra and I don’t see why Stephen can’t be one of them.”

Stephen Welsh has proved his career belongs away from Celtic

After excelling for the first half of the season at Motherwell, there were a few murmurs asking the question: ‘Does Welsh still have a future at Celtic?’

Returning to Parkhead proved that this isn’t the case.

He barely played under Martin O’Neill but has now returned to Motherwell and it is like he never left.

It’s just another sign that the 26-year-old is ready for his next chapter away from the club and start afresh elsewhere.
