Motherwell football club have requested that travelling Celtic fans bring donations to a food bank drive taking place prior to the teams’ Scottish Premiership clash on Wednesday night at Fir Park.
The Green Brigade led their annual North Curve foodbank collection yesterday prior to Celtic’s 4-2 win over Dundee United at Celtic Park, and with spiralling fuel and heating prices, it’s little surprise to see clubs launching similar initiatives.
All items collected on the day are due to be donated the Maranatha Motherwell Food Bank, which provides food parcels to those in need in the local area.
Motherwell have detailed the collection on their website, which includes details of collection points for Celtic fans to drop items off on their way into the match at Fir Park.
Motherwell CEO Alan Burrows said: “Unfortunately, food banks are now having to play a vital role in helping the most vulnerable in our community.
“Given soaring inflation levels, rising interest rates and the energy crisis, more and more people are tragically having to rely on the thoughtfulness and generosity of others to help feed their family.
“Over the last few years, Motherwell fans have really stepped up to the mark and helped stock up food banks all over Lanarkshire. This year, as we approach the cold winter months, we are asking those who can to once again help.”
The club have requested donations of tins of the following: soup, beans, pasta, custard, rice pudding, fruit, vegetables, potatoes, noodles, meat, tuna.
Fans can also donate long-life milk, breakfast cereal, tea and coffee, and toiletries including soap, shower gel, and shampoo.
The Cooper Stand car park will have a collection point for Motherwell fans, whilst the travelling Celtic support can donate at points on the approach to the Tommy McLean Stand, with all collection points opening at 6pm, the match kicking off at 7:45pm.
