Mourinho comments don’t make good reading for Celtic over Wanyama

Spurs boss Jose Mourinho says former Celtic midfielder Victor Wanyama hasn’t approached him for a chat about his future at the North London club.

Back in November, we told you how Hoops boss Neil Lennon had admitted that he would love to bring Wanyama back for a second spell at the club. During the club’s AGM (reported by Daily Record live blog at 13:32) Lennon is reported as saying the following:

“For a player like Wanyama, availability and affordability. Would I like Wanyama in the building? Of course.

“But it may not be an area we are looking to add to because of the way the midfield is functioning.”

Since that moment, talk that the Kenyan midfielder could be in line for a shock return to Glasgow has been rife, although it has mellowed over the past couple of days. Wanyama has been totally frozen out of things at Spurs, playing just ten minutes of football since Mourinho was appointed in November.

But for all the chat in Glasgow, there has been very little said by the London club. Until the weekend, when the Portuguese boss was asked a question about the 28-year-old’s immediate future. Mourinho gave a response that may not have been music to the ears of the Celtic support.

“He’s our player,” the Spurs boss said, as reported by football.london. “If he wants to leave or not, he didn’t tell me, we didn’t discuss. We are calm about it. Good professional. That’s it.”

Wanyama would surely have spoken to Mourinho if he wanted to leave

Without doubting the experienced gaffer’s integrity too much, it does seem a little strange that Wanyama wouldn’t have had a conversation about finding some more game time.

The Kenyan clearly isn’t needed around the club at the moment. That much has been shown by the fact he has made just one appearance since Mourinho’s appointment – in a dead rubber Champions League clash against Bayern Munich.

Surely Wanyama wants to get out and play football. And surely there would be many able suitors, including ourselves, interested in taking him until the end of the season.

You would think so, but the truth is that the big midfielder will have want to move for a transfer to happen. The fact that he hasn’t even had a conversation about leaving, according to Mourinho, doesn’t suggest that he’s overly keen.

And if he’s not overly keen then chances are he won’t be turning up at Parkhead any time soon. The big reunion the Celtic support were looking forward to may have to be postponed, for a little while at least.
