Callum McGregor’s current contract with Celtic still has a while to run. It expires in 2023. However, that hasn’t stopped Celtic legend Murdo MacLeod from calling on the club to extend his deal, and give the player a pay rise.
“The club need to give him good money in a good contract. That will give him a massive boost” he said, as reported by the Scottish Sun.
“He totally deserves it”
“I will be delighted if someone of Callum’s calibre is going to be rewarded because he totally deserves it. f he gets his reward of an enhanced deal then it will make him feel wanted and it will encourage him to play even better.”
Will Celtic be thinking of extending McGregor’s deal? Perhaps. It would be a good move, to give a player who has been vital to the Hoops for years a new contract.
There is also another reason to give the player a new deal that MacLeod hasn’t mentioned. It could fend off any interested sides who want to buy the player.
Premier League side reportedly tried to sign player
It was reported that Leicester City tried to sign McGregor on the last day on the English transfer window in August.
Celtic rightfully refused to sell such an important player. However, it would not be a surprise to see Leicester make another move for the player sooner rather than later.
A wage increase from Celtic could stop the player from being interested in offers from a Premier League side. MacLeod’s idea seems like a good one. It will be interesting to see if the Hoops decide to extend his deal, ahead of the January transfer window.
