National boss reacts as Celtic midfielder Paulo Bernardo scores in Portugal U21 win vs Slovakia

Paulo Bernardo is in great goalscoring form for Portugal U21s as the Celtic midfielder captains his country to another win.

Celtic currently has 13 players on international duty and Bernardo was involved once again for Portugal U21s as they took on Ukraine and Slovakia in this break.

The Portuguese youngster earned his 27th cap against the Slovaks in a meaningless game for Rui Jorge’s side.

Portugal has already qualified for the U21 European Championships next summer and Bernardo shone once again in the win.

Goals from Carlos Forbs and Henrique Aurajo helped Portugal’s kids recover from going behind to an early Sebastian Nebyla goal that gave the Slovakians a surprise lead.

Bernardo sealed the win with Portugal’s third but even that didn’t fully please Jorge at full time.

Speaking to the Portugal FA’s official website, Jorge said, “We expected a Slovakia of this kind, intense, with very high levels of aggressiveness.

“It was a good test, but eleven against eleven we were not superior. Then, when they were reduced to ten elements, we were able to make good use of the numerical superiority, something that does not always happen.

“Until the expulsion, we didn’t feel superior, although we started creating danger at the beginning of both halves. I never felt the game was perfectly controlled.

“Superiority is evident only after the expulsion when we were clearly dominant. We continued to create situations, we scored three goals and ended up winning the game.”
