Neil Lennon admits Europa League scenario is “weird”

Neil Lennon has admitted it feels a bit “weird” to have Europa League knockout qualification sorted with two games to go.

The Bhoys host Rennes tomorrow night in what is a meaningless game in terms of qualification. Our record in the four preceding Group E clashes means that all that is up for grabs is clinching top spot.

But Lennon says his side are “still driven” as they aim to win their final home fixture.

“It’s sort of weird,” he told press, as shown on the official Celtic YouTube channel. “I’ve not really been in this position before.

“We’re still driven. I don’t want them to come off it at the minute. I want them to stay to stay on the edge and the level that they have been on for the last 6-8 weeks.

“So it’s important that we prepare well. We go into the game with confidence but not overconfidence or complacency.”

The first-team will be relishing all upcoming matches

Many have talked about the challenges of the congested fixture list between now and Christmas. However, one thing that hasn’t really been taken into account is the way the team are feeling.

They’re all so full of confidence at present that they’re probably wanting the games to come thick and fast. Players always say they’d rather play matches than train anyway.

That’s what Lennon was touching on when he said he didn’t want the team “to come off it at the minute”. We’ve built up so much momentum in recent months and it would be foolish for us to take our foot off the gas just because the game isn’t must win.

We can achieve so much over the next five weeks or so before the winter shutdown. Thankfully our manager realises that and is keen to keep everyone “on the edge.”
