Celtic manager Neil Lennon has stated that he believes a deadline-day move today could be a positive for Luca Connell.

The Irish youngster was signed in the summer from Bolton Wanderers. However, he’s spent his time this season with the development squad for large parts. Despite occasionally joining in with the first-team, Connell hasn’t managed to make a competitive appearance.

Celtic have done some terrific work in getting their youngsters out the door for loan spells this January. The likes of Lee O’Connor and Jonathan Afolabi have already headed to Partick Thistle and Dunfermline Athletic respectively.

Connell has already been linked with a move away by Sky Sports journalist Lyall Thomas. He claimed on Twitter that both Barnsley and Sunderland are interested in signing him on loan. And Lennon, speaking in comments published by the Scottish Sun, stated that a move would possibly be ideal for Connell.

“It might be good for him to get out and get some game time. He had a thigh injury which kept him out for a couple of months and now he is playing very well in the development team.”

Celtic’s January clearout has been impressive

Celtic have done extremely well to get plenty of their fringe-men and starlets out on temporary deals. As well as the two mentioned above, we’ve also let the likes of Eboue Kouassi and Jack Hendry leave too. Scott Sinclair, meanwhile, was the first out the door this summer.

Connell could definitely do with following in their footsteps. He’s now had a full first half of the season with the development side. Given the fact that we’re no longer in the reserve league, there aren’t many reserve games that generate profile anymore.

It’s also not as if Connell has yet to taste senior football either. When we signed him from Bolton, he arrived having already made 12 appearances for the Championship side (Transfermarkt).

Senior football, especially at the level Sunderland and Barnsley play at, would be terrific. When Lewis Morgan went to the Stadium of Light last season, he arrived with a spring in his step. Sure, he didn’t make it here in the end, but it gave him a boost.

Chances here for the rest of the season look limited. He’s already looking on and seeing the likes of Scott Brown, Callum McGregor, Olivier Ntcham, and Ismaila Soro ahead of him in the pecking order.

So we’ll see if this one gets pushed over the line today. It’s surely a move that all parties would like to see happen.
