One of the most notable aspects of Celtic’s 1-0 Betfred Cup Final win over Rangers at Hampden Park on Sunday was the omission of Leigh Griffiths from the squad.
The Hoops striker was not even on the bench, as Neil Lennon opted to start with Lewis Morgan up-front, with Odsonne Edouard on the bench.
The Hoops boss has now given his explanation of why Griffiths didn’t feature in the squad, and has also revealed that the player will feature against Cluj on Thursday night.
“Our plans altered”
“Griff probably would’ve been in the squad on Sunday but our plans altered when Odsonne Edouard called off and said he couldn’t start the game – otherwise he would have started and Griff would’ve been on the bench” Lennon said, as reported by the Daily Record.
“But when Odsonne didn’t feel comfortable started, Leigh missed out, but he and Bayo will be involved in Cluj.”
Griffiths must have been extremely disappointed not to be involved in the game at all. He would have been desperate to feature, and show that he still has what it takes to be a main player for Celtic.
However, circumstances dictated that he couldn’t, and in the end the move paid off as the Betfred Cup remains in the Celtic Park trophy cabinet.
Could be set for first start since August
Now Griffiths will get a chance to show what he can do when the Hoops play Cluj on Thursday in their final Europa League fixture.
The game is a relatively meaningless for Celtic, as the group has already been won. But it won’t be for Griffiths. It will be interesting to see if he starts his first game for the Hoops since August. You have to think that the chances of him starting the game are high, as Neil Lennon will no doubt make a lot of changes from the team which defeated Rangers.
Griffiths might well get the nod to start. It is up to him to take advantage of that.
