Celtic reportedly in the dark over Dedryck Boyata saga

According to the Daily Record, Celtic aren’t aware of Hertha Berlin and Dedryck Boyata’s transfer negotiations.

The Record states that sources in Germany believe a deal is close to being agreed. This is despite the fact that Neil Lennon spoke over the weekend about hopefully persuading the Belgian to stay.

Given that Boyata is in the final months of his contract, however, he’s allowed to talk to clubs about a potential move. The ideal scenario is that Celtic are kept informed, but it seems that isn’t the case.

Lennon’s plea for Boyata to stay is likely to fall on deaf ears. After all, his agent Jacques Lichtenstein has already stated that renewing at Parkhead isn’t an option. He’s also had his falling outs with the club this season. Therefore, any chance of Boyata staying is surely minimal if not non-existent.

Celtic should give up here

There comes a point when a club should just give up on keeping a player. The Boyata case feels like it’s so strongly swayed this way that the club should be focusing on summer defensive replacements.

Boyata has never come out and said he wants to stay at Parkhead. The Belgian has remained personally tight-lipped over his future this season. It would be interesting to see if anything has been discussed about it in training, but nothing has ever been made public.

He’s going to be a big player to replace too. His work over the last two and a half years since breaking through under Brendan Rodgers has been immense. His dominance has improved massively, even if he still lacks composure on the ball at times.

But he isn’t irreplaceable either. Celtic need to cast the net far and wide to find the best alternative, and this should mean spending plenty of money on his replacement too.

In terms of keeping him, however, it looks a lost cause. If a deal was going to be agreed, then surely it would’ve been done by now. If he stayed at Parkhead now, it would be an incredible turnaround.
