Neil Lennon has provided his own verdict on the appointment of Ange Postecoglou as Celtic manager.

Lennon’s reputation in the eyes of the Celtic support diminished last season after a campaign from hell. Failure to secure 10-in-a-row combined with a refusal to leave his post in order to save it left supporters with sheer apathy towards the football club.

This has led to a craving for change at both managerial and boardroom level. Celtic delivered on the former last week when Postecoglou was announced as the new boss. The Greek-Australian tactician arrives after winning the J-League with Yokohama F.Marinos in 2019 and with a massive reputation back in his homeland of Oz.

And in an interview live on BBC Radio Scotland’s Euros Breakfast Show this morning [BBC Radio Scotland, 15/06, 09:05], Lennon was happy to big up the appointment.

“I would be excited about it”

“I think they’ve got a good manager in. I think Ange is someone the club have had their eye on. Eddie was the first-choice or maybe talks had been ongoing for a while. Everyone uses words like ‘it’s a disaster’ but it’s not, the club’s okay, and the players are okay.

“He’s got a blank canvas to put his own stamp on things. It may take him a bit of time to sort of get the style of play that he wants, but I think Celtic will be absolutely fine.

“I think he’ll go in with his eyes wide open. With a fresh pair of eyes and a fresh philosophy, the players might buy into it. He’s done a decent job with Yokohama, and he’ll come in and bring a freshness and a different style of play. I wouldn’t be worried about it. I would be excited about it if I was a Celtic fan.”

Neil Lennon gives Ange Postecoglou his Celtic backing

Well there certainly doesn’t seem to be any spite there from Lennon towards his successor. Given the manner of the former’s Celtic departure, it would’ve been easy for him to show a least a scintilla of anger.

So credit to Lennon for that. And he actually touches on an important point about the importance of being excited about the appointment.

No, it wasn’t the appointment we all initially wanted. It wasn’t the club’s first-choice, and there’s undoubtedly some panic given Postecoglou is an unknown on this side of the planet. However, you have to look at the positives.

We’re getting a manager who has been a success in almost every job he’s held. He has a reputation of being one of if not the best coach ever produced by Australia. He’s also managed at a World Cup and won countless tournaments with the Australia youth sides. That’s not including his A-League and J-League titles with Brisbane Roar and Yokohama.

Throw into the mix the fact that he’s known for playing high tempo, pressing football and it should be a match made in heaven. Fear will dictate that many are concerned about what this appointment means for the football club. But we have to look forward with hope and excitement.

Lennon has been wrong about many things over the last 12 months. This isn’t one of them.

In other news, the fixture schedule has been released for the 2021/22 campaign, with all Celtic vs Rangers dates confirmed.
