Celtic manager Neil Lennon has explained why Marian Shved was not included in yesterday’s matchday squad to face St Johnstone, The Daily Record report.

Shved came off the bench to make his debut away to Nomme Kalju last Tuesday. He scored in stoppage time to the delight of Hoops supporters everywhere.

After such a impressive impact, there was anticipation he could feature in some way for the visit of Tommy Wright’s side.

However, Lennon named a starting eleven and bench with the Ukrainian nowhere to be seen.

The manager explained this was because he needed defensive cover in Anthony Ralston and Jonny Hayes. He also hinted Shved will be back sooner rather than later.

As quoted by The Daily Record, he said: “I hope Shved will be back on Wednesday but I can only pick 18 players.

“With Jozo and Jullien out today, I needed to bolster the bench with defenders just in case and that proved right with the injury to Elhamed.

“But Marian should be back in the squad. He’s only played 25 minutes in the last few weeks and I’ve got good depth there.”

Shved’s early signs

Patience is required when it comes to the young winger. Still just 22 and moving to a new country and new culture, it could take time for him to adjust to the Celtic way.

However, the early signs are very positive. He looks every bit like the direct winger with a real goal threat we were expecting. Fans kept a close eye on his progress in the second half of last season. His goal against Nomme Kalju was typical of some of those highlights.

With a difficult pre-season from an injury and fitness perspective, Lennon is right not to rush him into the team. His time will come.

Matches across four competitions are sure to test our squad to its limits. Shved will be needed at the top of his game. A gradual introduction into first-team action will help him get to that level.
