Neil Lennon has urged “work in progress” Leigh Griffiths to continue working hard for his Celtic and Scotland chance.
The 29-year-old was reportedly gutted (Daily Record) to miss out on Steve Clarke’s squad for the recent defeats to Russia and Belgium. Griffiths is said to be targeting next month’s return clash in Russia and the home game against San Marino as a chance to get back in the national setup.
But the forward has only played 13 minutes of football in Celtic’s last four games, and Lennon insists that he’s still got a way to go.
“He’s just a work in progress,” he told press. (Celtic YouTube channel)
He’s had a long time out and maybe these round of games were a little bit too soon for him.
“He’ll probably be honest with himself and say the next round is probably when he’s looking forward to playing.
“He needs more game time here but he needs to keep working away at what he’s doing.”
Could Lennon play Griffiths against Hamilton
It will be interesting to see who Lennon decides to go with against the Accies tomorrow. Odsonne Edouard is undoubtedly the form striker of Celtic’s three but the Frenchman has played a lot of football lately and may be rested with the midweek clash against Rennes in mind.
That would leave Griffiths to fight it out against Vakoun Issouf Bayo. The Ivory Coast forward was preferred during last month’s victory over Hearts but Griffiths was the chosen man when Celtic last visited Lanarkshire against Motherwell four weeks ago.
It really is anyone’s guess who Lennon will choose to play on Saturday lunchtime. The real beauty is that the Northern Irishman now has a choice.
