Neil Lennon says that Callum McGregor would be “a good candidate” to replace Scott Brown as Celtic captain when the veteran midfielder finally hangs up his boots.

Brown is expected to call time on his career at the end of next season, and said as much in an interview in early 2019.

The skipper said: “It’s been a long time and I’ve enjoyed every single moment but I think another two years and that’ll be me done and dusted.” (Daily Record)

That means that the hunt for his successor is very much done. But could the man in question already be at the club?

Well, Neil Lennon certainly thinks that is a possibility as he was asked by press about McGregor’s suitability to be captain once Brown moves on.

“I think he would be a very good candidate, yes,” the Hoops gaffer said on Thursday, as per the club’s official YouTube channel.

“He’s been fantastic all season. He scored again last night so I’m really delighted with the goals return from him.

“His reading of the game, his understanding of the game, his quality on the ball, his pace and drive in the game.

“He always seems to pick the right pass and that’s just the sign of a quality player.”

McGregor has worked under Brown for years

While Lennon’s actual comment on McGregor’s captain suitability was pretty short, it’s interesting that he does see the Scotland international as a viable option.

McGregor captained the team in the Betfred Cup clash against Partick Thistle this season, as Brown was rested, but being a permanent captain is a totally different deal.

Many supporters believed that we would have to recruit a replacement for Brown once he leaves, such would be the hole left both on and off the park.

But it does make sense to employ someone who has already been at the club, knows our winning spirit and what it takes to succeed.

Of course, McGregor being a future captain will depend on him staying put. He’s such a talented player that we’re likely to see some interest in him in the coming windows.

But Brown was the same when he was younger. It’s one to keep an eye on for sure.
