Neil Lennon has given a positive update on Celtic man Tom Rogic.
Lennon says the Aussie playmaker is still recovering from a couple of knocks picked up at the tail end of last season. Rogic started just 26 of the club’s 63 competitive matches in 2018/2019 and hasn’t exactly hit the ground running this term either.
But Lennon is still hopeful Rogic can make a contribution in the not too distant future.
He told the Daily Record: “He is in rehab. Obviously from the knee injury last season and he picked up an ankle knock in the cup final.
“He’s back out now, he looks great, really looking in good condition so hopefully he won’t be too far away but he’s missed the whole of pre-season so he has a bit of work to do.”
Is Lennon totally correct about Rogic?
Lennon can sugarcoat it all he likes but the reality is that Rogic is entering a critical time at Celtic. The 26-year-old was a complete non-event for the club last season, contributing just five goals.
It continually felt like we were playing with ten men when he was in the team. His languid style is easy to put up with when he’s creating and scoring opportunities but when he’s off his game it looks ten times worse.
It was vital for Rogic to hit the ground running with a good pre-season this year. The fact he has once again missed the boat must give Neil Lennon grave concerns.
Of course, Rogic’s injuries aren’t entirely his fault. It’s not as if the Australian is going out to deliberately get hurt. But it has reached a point where Celtic must seriously consider their next course of action.
He’s going to struggle to make it back into the first-team given the strength of depth in that area of the pitch. So now may be the right time for him to leave and generate the club a neat profit.
