Neil Lennon has given a fresh update on Leigh Griffiths.

The forward hasn’t featured for the Hoops since the start of December after taking a break from football due to personal reasons. He returned to training in March and underwent a fitness test last week.

“It went well”, Lennon told the Scotsman. “Leigh is running on the grass and doing a little more conditions work.

“He is making good progress. He has another couple of weeks of work before we can throw him in with the rest of the squad.”

Lennon’s comments suggest that the Scotland international may be unlikely to feature before the end of the season. This campaign has just three weeks to go and it is highly unlikely that Griffiths would be risked in either next week’s derby or the Scottish Cup final.

Perfect ending to awful season

The match against Hearts at Celtic Park on trophy day may be an ideal chance to reintroduce the forward. The match is completely meaningless and we’ll likely find ourselves up against a second string Jambos eleven.

That pressure free environment may be the ideal chance for Griffiths to get a taste of first team action.

It would also make sense for Lennon to rest star man Odsonne Edouard. The Frenchman is going to be a key man at Hampden on the 25th May and we could do without him getting injured. There’s a good chance the visitors will set out to be physical in the hope they can cause a few injuries ahead of the final.

Griffiths is perhaps more able to deal with rough treatment than Edouard. He also loves playing against the Gorgie side and invariably scores when going up against them.
