Neil Lennon has his say on Auston Trusty Celtic penalty foul, justice done with Ollie Watkins ‘incredible’ miss

It was a tiring evening of football last night as Celtic scrapped with Aston Villa.

The Hoops were desperately unlucky on an incredible evening of action at Villa Park when they roared back from 2-0 down within four minutes to take it to 2-2.

Adam Idah finally found his shooting boots after months of blanks but the Irishman has never lost his confidence, nor has manager Brendan Rodgers lost it in him, either.

Unfortunately, Ollie Watkins would score a third for the hosts in the second-half of the Champions League tie on a night of drama where Watkins also spurned a major chance to seal the deal.

As it happened, it meant little for Unai Emery’s side when Rogers took advantage of sub Dane Murray‘s mistake to nab his hat-trick, but the penalty was still a bone of contention during the match.

Auston Trusty felled Watkins but took the ball with him.

That did not stop referee Clement Turpin from pointing to the spot and VAR did not intervene to urge the whistler to check it again.

For co-commentator Neil Lennon on TNT Sports, he felt it was a decision that was a soft one as the American defender did get plenty on the ball.

What Neil Lennon thought of Celtic conceding Aston Villa penalty

Watching a clip of the foul, Lennon said: “Here it is, I thought he got some of the ball, he gets his body across.

“Does he get the man first and then the ball?

“It’s tough, it’s such a hard one to call, that.

“I’m not sure it’ll be overturned as a clear and obvious error, I just think Trusty gets his body and his leg there and protects the ball, then plays the ball.

“Even Ollie Watkins’ reaction is a wee bit reticent to it and Trusty’s in disbelief. I can understand why.

“You can translate that any way you want, although the referee was clear in his mind.

“I think it’s really soft.”

Ollie Watkins missed in an ‘incredible’ moment

After Watkins’ incredible miss, Lennon added: “Wow. This game’s had everything, that is incredible.

“That will be shown for years to come.

“I think his left foot has just given way, wow, as he’s slipped he’s hit it with his right foot off his left.

“That’s incredible, just when I thought I’d seen everything in football.

“A top class player, it’s just his left foot gives way and as he hits it, it hits of his trailing leg as his foot goes.

“Absolutely incredible. A big break for Celtic, though, and maybe they’ll feel like justice has been done.”
