Neil Lennon hopes the Celtic fans and players can connect to produce something special against Lazio on Thursday night.

The Hoops aim to take a further step towards qualification for the last 32 of the Europa League when the Italian giants visit the East End of Glasgow. Lennon’s men sit top of the group with four points from two matches, but three points against Lazio would have them in an even better position.

The Northern Irishman says it will be a “real test” for his players but he hopes they and the fans can combine on what promises to be an enthralling night.

“We got a great point in Rennes, a good win against Cluj,” he told the Daily Record. “This is a real test for us now and one the players are relishing. They should really want to get their sleeves rolled up now and really get into this.

“This is what some of them are here for, to taste these nights. There is no better arena. The fans are craving European football and hopefully the fans can connect with them and go and put on a performance.

“I think they are ready – it’s a great test for them. Then again, I think we’ll be a great test for Lazio as well.”

Lennon knows how important the fans will be against Lazio

All the ingredients are there for a special night in Paradise. The occasion is there. The match is important in terms of both side’s Europa League progress. The opposition are glamorous. And most importantly, Celtic have a fighting chance.

You wouldn’t quite say we were favourites against Simone Inzaghi’s illustrious stars but we’re certainly not underdogs. That was often the case under Brendan Rodgers when you felt the team were already beaten before they entered the pitch.

Cluj blip aside, we have been imperious at home in Europe this season. Lazio is by far the biggest test we’ve faced but that should inspire the players as they aim to take a notable scalp.

If the team start well the fans will get behind them. That could set the tone for a glorious night.
