As we have mentioned on here many times already over the course of this week, the appointment of Brendan Rodgers for a second spell at Celtic has not won over all the Celtic fans.
It does seem as though the majority of the Hoops supporters are happy at the appointment but there is a vocal section of the fanbase that still remain sceptical.
And that is understandable considering the way he left in 2019. But Rodgers knows this as well. He is only too aware of the feelings of those Celtic fans and he even said himself that that was one of the reasons he returned to the club.
But former manager, Neil Lennon has said that there is one thing that Rodgers can do that will win over those fans. And it will mean the Celtic manager seeing out all three years of his current contract.
Lennon said [The Sun], “Brendan has signed a three-year contract, and if he can win the league in each of those seasons then Celtic will have overtaken Rangers with 56 titles.
“That’s an incentive for the board, the management and all the players.
“It will be just one more thing which we have over them, added to the European Cup win, the Invincible Treble, the Quadruple Treble and two nine-in-a-rows.
“So if Brendan can reach 56 before Rangers then the section of the support who are still wary of him would forget all about the fact he didn’t stay, as they used to sing, for ten in a row.
“He’ll see that as a challenge and he’ll embrace it.
“You want to be pushed because it keeps you and your players on their toes.”
The former Celtic manager is spot on. The Ibrox club’s supporters have had to endure and watch an extraordinary period of dominance by Celtic over the last 20 years.
If we were to overhaul their total ‘trophy count’, it would categorically instil Celtic as Scotland’s most successful club and stop our friends from across the city from making that claim.
But most importantly, and let’s forget the Rangers angle here, if Rodgers does manage to win the next three league titles then surely that will be enough to convince those Celtic fans that doubted him to turn their opinions around?
I would like to think so. But for now, Rodgers needs to get to work to defend our current treble. Let’s concentrate on the first title and let the rest take care of themselves.
