Neil Lennon must resist throwing Scott Sinclair back in Celtic team

This Sunday must see Celtic interim boss Neil Lennon resist the temptation to throw 60-goal Scott Sinclair back into the side.

Sinclair has been a favourite of Lennon’s since the manager’s appointment back in February. The Englishman has featured in nine of Lennon’s 11 games in charge so far.

But, surprisingly, Sinclair didn’t start in the 3-0 win at Pittodrie last week. The former Manchester City and Aston Villa man has woefully underperformed this season for the Hoops. So much so that he’s failed to make the left-wing spot his own despite having next to no heavy competition.

Last Sunday, Lennon decided to go with Timothy Weah for the match at Aberdeen. Granted, it wasn’t exactly a  memorable outing for the American either, but at the very least he was lively and got beyond the full-back on several occasions.

Like it or not, that is more than can be said of Sinclair this season. Indeed, the Brendan Rodgers man continues to be a shadow of his former self, and looks to have lost pace over the last 12 months or so. He barely gets beyond his full-back, and his final ball has become incredibly poor.

Sinclair may still have 17 goals this season, but he’s only scored one in his last 12, and has yet to find the net under Lennon.

No Weah should Sinclair start

Weah, meanwhile, continues to be an intriguing young talent. The PSG youngster will head back to France as it stands this summer. This could be our last chance to see if he can perform in a Glasgow derby. It will be a regret post-match if Lennon doesn’t start him and things don’t go our way.

These days, Sinclair is offering next to nothing. It’s upsetting, but it’s true. Every time he receives the ball play either slows up or breaks down. He seems to be in some form of serious confidence crisis.

Not to mention Sinclair was totally ineffective the last time we pitched up at Ibrox.

If the Englishman comes into form in the summer, then great. He’ll have earned back his spot and we can look forward to seeing the Sinclair of 2016/17 once again.

But even though he has 60 goals to his name in green-and-white, that shouldn’t just guarantee him a start this Sunday. Weah is proving to be the better player at this moment in time – it’s about time he finally gets his big platform.
