Celtic’s 3-1 Europa League win over Rennes on Thursday has to go down as yet another European glory night for the Hoops in a season that has been full of them. The Hoops clinched top spot in Europa League Group E with the win.
However, despite the won, it would not be surprise if Fraser Forster and the rest of the Hoops defence were annoyed that Celtic conceded a late goal to Rennes.
Adrien Hunou’s header was nothing more than a consolation goal. But the Hoops defence might well be annoyed at not keeping a clean sheet.
However, Neil Lennon wasn’t upset with the fact that the Hoops conceded a late goal. In fact, he felt it was ‘understandable’ that the Hoops would take the foot off the gas towards the end of the game. After all, it was 3-0 when Rennes scored their goal.”
“Real swagger”
“It was important to keep momentum going, and we played with freedom and real swagger. There was no complacency apart from the last 15 minutes which is totally understandable” Lennon said, as reported by STV.
The goal conceded isn’t that important in the grand scheme of things. It was just a blip, in all honesty. However, after another fine European display, Fraser Forster might have been a bit annoyed not to record a second clean sheet in the group stages.
Hoops have come far in Europe this season
Still, it shows you how far Celtic have come in Europe this season when the only problem on the night is conceding a consolation goal against a Ligue 1 side.
That is a situation that few would have expected Celtic to be in when the draw was originally made. Celtic have made big strides in Europe so far this season. The blip of conceding a late goal against Rennes isn’t going to take anything away from that. Now the Hoops can look ahead with confidence to next month’s last 32 draw.
