Neil Lennon on “unfair” Europa League player situation

Neil Lennon admits it’s a little “unfair” that his players don’t get to celebrate their Europa League win over Lazio a little longer.

The Celtic first-team took the acclaim of their supporters following the dramatic win on Thursday night, but the fixture schedule means they soon have to turn attention to their next match. That comes against Aberdeen on Sunday – and it’s one that can’t be taken lightly.

“I don’t know how the players are feeling about it,” Lennon admitted to Sky Sports on Friday. “We have a lot of experienced players in there so they will know how to deal with it.

“It can be a bit unfair that you don’t get more time to lap it up because it was a great night and a titanic game.

“It was a proper European team, proper European atmosphere, proper European game.

“It had a bit of everything and the players can take an enormous amount of personal satisfaction from the way they handled it.”

Lennon must motivate players to back up Europa League win

Lennon did seem a little bit frustrated at the fact that he and the team didn’t get to bask in the wonder of the victory for a little bit longer. If points are dropped to Aberdeen on Sunday then spirits will be dampened again – much like they were after the Livingston defeat.

It’s a tough ask for Lennon and the team but games coming thick and fast are a sign that things are going well. We’ll play matches in three different competitions before the next international break in mid-November. If things weren’t going as well we may have had an easier schedule – but that would have been no use to anyone at the club.

The old saying about taking one game at a time is critical for Celtic here. That next game is at Pittodrie on Sunday. Win and it all just keeps rolling on.
