Neil Lennon urges caution in the transfer window

Neil Lennon reckons that some Celtic players may have to depart the club before they can bring in new recruits.

The Hoops are widely expected to splash the cash after receiving £25million from Arsenal for Kieran Tierney. But Lennon has warned selling clubs that they won’t be shelling out inflated fees just for the sake of it.

The Daily Record have some quotes from the Northern Irishman as he addressed the press ahead of the visit to Motherwell on Saturday.

On the Tierney money, Lennon said: “It makes things a little bit easier in terms of maybe pushing the boat out a little bit more but we’re not going to break transfer records and spend silly money.

“We have targets in mind and we are working away on that sooner or later. We are looking at maybe two or three positions.

“We also maybe need to move a few players on to get them playing or make room in the squad. Until we do that, we may not look to bring anyone in just yet.”

Lennon has done a good job in the transfer window so far

Celtic have done a good job so far this summer in getting rid of deadwood and bringing the squad down to a neat size. Long-term failures Marvin Compper and Scott Allan have departed the scene while so have the likes of Youssouf Mulumbu, Cristian Gamboa and Dorus De Vries.

As a result, the Hoops squad is far more trimmed. However, there are still a few more who could be moved on. Jack Hendry, Anthony Ralston and Calvin Miller don’t look like they have much of a future at the club. The trio are likely to be some of the players that Lennon was referring to in his comments.

Scott Sinclair is another player currently out of favour but it’s hard to see him moving now the transfer window for England’s top two leagues has closed. Eboue Kouassi is another who could be for the off after failing to make a breakthrough.

It is perhaps a little concerning that Lennon feels the club need to get rid of some players before bringing some more in. The club should look to be proactive in the market rather than reactive. With such big games coming up over the next month it really doesn’t make much sense to wait around.
