Neil Lennon won’t compare Odsonne Edouard to Celtic icon

Neil Lennon won’t make any comparisons between current Celtic striker Odsonne Edouard and any of the Hoops’ illustrious strikers from the past.

For example, the Hoops boss will not group Edouard with Celtic icon Henrik Larsson, even though both players were terrific strikers.

“I’ll take your word for it as that will be up for debate amongst a lot of Celtic fans and a lot of football people” Lennon said, as reported by the Daily Record, when asked if the Frenchman was the Hoops’ best striker since Larsson.

“We have had some great strikers and great goal scorers here even since Henrik left. He’s taken on the responsibility for being the main man here for someone so young.”

Comparing any Celtic striker of recent vintage to Henrik Larsson would be a mistake. That is why it was sensible of Lennon to avoid any comparisons between the two players.

Once in a generation striker

Larsson was a once in a generation striker for Celtic fans. Edouard might be a great player. However, he is not yet at Larsson’s level. He may get there in time, but unfortunately that might not be at Celtic.

However, should Edouard turn in another match-winning performance for the Hoops against Rangers, then the comparisons will continue.

It is too early to judge where Edouard places in the best Celtic strikers of the last 20 years. The likes of Gary Hooper and Moussa Dembele would need to be under consideration.

When it comes down to it though, all of them pale in comparison to Larsson.
