Why Neil Lennon won’t be going to Fulham if Celtic want him

Neil Lennon has, in recent days, had to brush off talk of speculation linking him with Fulham.

Indeed, the Celtic interim manager has said that it’s “all noise” when asked about the Craven Cottage outfit. And that’s hardly a surprise either.

The truth is, if Fulham truly want Lennon, they can forget it for now. The Northern Irishman has already had to dismiss interest in the Scotland job, which recently became vacant too.

And, if a decision was to be made between Celtic and Fulham, just who do you think Lennon would choose? It’s safe to assume Lennon wants this job permanently. Interestingly, he hasn’t actually confirmed that’s the case, but it’s hardly rocket science either.

Only Celtic fans can truly understand the connection Lennon has with the club. He’s a Parkhead legend, and has been a massive success here as both a player and a manager. When you talk about great Celtic captains, Lennon is right up there. When you talk about successful Celtic managers, he again holds his own.

No guarantees Lennon gets the Celtic job

Granted, that’s not to say he definitely will get the Celtic job permanently. He’s hardly won over the Celtic faithful, and the sluggish performances since he came into the job are difficult to shrug off.

But Fulham, like Scotland, are simply looking at the right man at the wrong time. Lennon could very easily make his mark down in England with the right club, but will he even be interested if the carrot of the Celtic job remains available? If we’re being honest, Lennon will likely have his eye on the treble treble and then sealing this role permanently.

Fulham’s relegation to the Championship also doesn’t help them. They now don’t even have the carrot of England’s top league to lure Lennon south.

But the reality is, any realistic club that wants Lennon will likely have to hope he fails at Celtic. If all goes well for the Northern Irishman and the job is offered to him? You would be surprised if it takes him long to think it over.

Fulham could end up being just one of a number of clubs interested in Lenny. But, for Celtic fans who want Lennon to stay beyond the end of the season, there’s nothing to worry about. We all know who his first choice is.
