Neil Lennon says it would be “interesting” if Martin O’Neill was to make a return to Celtic.

O’Neill, recently sacked by Nottingham Forest, has been rumoured to be in line for a return to Glasgow in an advisory role to Lennon. Celtic’s current boss was quick to dispel any chat of such a move happening, but he also didn’t say he would be against working with his former boss again.

The Scottish Sun have some quotes from Lennon as he talks about O’Neill’s future in the game.

He said: “I hope he gets back in. He’s only in his mid-60s and you know what I think of him as a manager. It’s whether he fancies it.

“Could he come back   here in some role? He is fed up telling me what to do. He’s been doing it for 25 years.

“That would be an interesting one, but it’s not on the horizon.”

Could O’Neill make Celtic return?

If Celtic were looking at appointing someone in a technical role then a former manager would be the ideal place to start the search. O’Neill’s direct successor at the club – Gordon Strachan – has recently taken on a new role at Championship side Dundee. His vast experience will be a boost to the Dens Park side and it will be interesting to see how the pilot move works out.

Someone like O’Neill or Strachan returning to the club in a higher position would make sense. They know the inner workings of the club and have tasted good and bad times in the hotseat. They could pass on valuable advice to rookie managers like Lennon in his first spell and Ronny Deila.

It would also help to keep things moving forward in the event of shock departures – like Brendan Rodgers in February. The club should definitely consider the idea at the very least.
