Neil Lennon’s Celtic “character” comment is poor

There was perhaps only one Neil Lennon statement yesterday that will have stood out to Celtic fans.

The Hoops only just managed to knock out Championship outfit Dunfermline Athletic at Parkhead yesterday. The victory came after goals from Mikey Johnston and James Forrest spared Lennon’s blushes.

The major disappointment, however, was the manner of the win. Just days after being knocked out of the Champions League by CFR Cluj, Celtic fans wanted a reaction. A big performance was necessary to start trying to ease the pain fans had been feeling.

Instead, however, Celtic put on one of their most insipid performances yet under Lenny. And, afterward, Lennon had the following to say on the match:

Once again, there was nothing to be proud of after yesterday

Let’s get real – yesterday was a total embarrassment. Celtic should’ve come out against Dunfermline and totally ran over the top of them. It’s hardly a performance that inspires confidence for the rest of the season.

When Lenny comes out post-match, you’re hoping for something a bit stronger than this. Sure, he’s not going to throw his players under bus. That just isn’t what managers do. But there’s no admittance once more that he got things wrong. No admittance that his team just didn’t play well on the day.

Celtic struggled to break down Dunfermline for 90 minutes. Stevie Crawford’s side actually could’ve caused us even more trouble had they been clinical a big one-v-one chance of their own.

The fact is, however, that them even getting a whiff of a good result at Parkhead is shocking stuff from Celtic.

Fans’ response to that Twitter post by Celtic has seen plenty of rage fly around, and plenty of comments we can’t post on here. That was Neil’s chance to really apologise to fans who turned up and promise that things would get better. Instead, he’s too keen on praising players who don’t deserve it. Here’s a look at just a few of the responses to the post itself:

Showing character would’ve been rocking up at Parkhead and beating Dunfermline 5-0 after Tuesday night. The players constantly played with their heads down yesterday. There was no confidence or character whatsoever in that performance.

In truth, you would hope that Lenny felt the same.
