New Celtic defender Liam Scales has been called up to the senior Ireland squad.
In the last hour, the FAI announced that Scales would join Callum Robinson and Alan Browne as injury replacements. Dara O’Shea and Nathan Collins have been sent home after Wednesday night’s loss to Portugal [Sky Sports].
Scales, who arrived at Celtic from Shamrock Rovers earlier this week, was being touted for a call-up prior to moving to Glasgow. His form for Rovers in the LOI had many suggesting to Stephen Kenny that the defender would be of use to the Ireland set-up.
That’s come to pass, and we’re sure Scales won’t mind what position he plays. Speaking to Celtic’s in-house media this week, Scales said of his best position [Celtic FC]:
“Over the years I’ve played in plenty of positions. I suppose when I was younger I was a left-sided midfielder and I kind of dropped back. At UCD I played mainly as a centre-back and I played a bit of left-back there as well, and in my first season at Shamrock Rovers I played centre-back. But with injuries to players this season I was put out left and I did quite well.
“So I suppose I’m a versatile left-sided defender and I can play anywhere between the three positions – centre-back, left wing-back, left-back – as long as I’m playing, I’m happy.”
What a week for Celtic defender and Ireland international Liam Scales
Dream move? Check.
First international senior call-up? Check.

You’d have to imagine Liam Scales is being scraped off the ceiling somewhere. The promising 23-year-old defender has been tipped for a big things for quite a while, of course. A trial with Manchester City before joining Shamrock Rovers showed the regard he has been held in.
However, these are dreams becoming reality. With Azerbaijan and Serbia serving as Ireland’s next competition, there’s a very real chance Scales could see action.
If he does, it’ll cap a wonderful time in the young Irishman’s career.
