New Celtic signing Gustaf Lagerbielke has declared himself ready to compete for the Bhoys immediately after a summer of strong preparation in Sweden.

The Swedish top-flight runs a summer schedule so Lagerbielke is fully match-fit and able to become immediately involved, making appearances for Elfsborg right up to the weekend.

He’s made 16 appearances in total since April, so the schedule hasn’t been too heavy either. Lagerbielke is arriving at the perfect time to make an instant impact for the Bhoys – which could be needed.

The central defender said upon signing [Celtic FC]: “It was fun to get one last game with Elfsborg, even though we lost but it felt good to end that chapter in a good way, and I’m just excited now to be here.

“It’s been nice playing all summer in the Swedish league and getting match fitness, so I’m ready to go straight into the action here at Celtic.

“I know that all of them are really good players so it’s going to be fun to play with them and learn from them as well. I had a brief chat with the manager before I came here, and then a brief chat today, and he just welcomed me and it was nice to have me here, and I think we’ll take more tactical and football things in the future.”

Celtic play away to Kilmarnock in the Scottish League Cup on Sunday. That would be a tricky match to through Lagerbielke into – on an artificial pitch against a team with their tails up in the early part of the season.

But his selection could be necessary, especially if Cameron Carter-Vickers isn’t fit to feature. The USA international was subbed off against Aberdeen at the weekend with a hamstring complaint and we don’t yet have an update on his status.

Maik Nawrocki and Stephen Welsh are also available. The manager could well see it being beneficial to get Lagerbielke involved as quickly as possible, so it wouldn’t be much of a surprise see him feature alongside Nawrocki, especially when Scottish Premiership points are not on the line.
