New Denmark hope for Celtic star Matt O’Riley, Schmeichel responds to resignation

Celtic midfielder Matt O’Riley will be watching the situation around the Danish national team very closely after Kasper Hjulmand resigned as manager.

Hjulmand received sharp criticism in his homeland for the decision to omit O’Riley from his squad for the summer Euro 2024 tournament.

Denmark went on to qualify out of their group after three draws against Slovenia, England and Serbia but exited the competition at the last 16 stage after a 2-0 defeat to hosts Germany.

The Danish Football Association then conducted a review of that winless run. In conjunction with Hjulmand, there was mutual agreement that he should step down and a statement was released on Friday.

He will stay on at the FA in a consultancy role focused on the development of future prospects.

Fresh ideas could mean fresh chances for O’Riley

After a stellar 2023/24 campaign with Celtic that produced 19 goals and 18 assists in all competitions, many expected O’Riley to at least be involved with the wider Denmark squad over the summer.

Hjulmand relied on those experienced players he trusted most but a fresh approach could lead to more opportunities for the Celtic midfielder. Any new boss will be eager to build a team working towards future tournaments.

O’Riley was born in England but qualifies for Denmark through his grandmother. He has so far won two senior international caps after declaring for the country and becoming involved within their U21 set-up.

More strong form for Celtic, or another club, over the coming season will surely ensure in further call-ups.

Kasper Schmeichel reacts to Kasper Hjulmand exit

It has been an eventful 24 hours for Kasper Schmeichel. The new Celtic goalkeeper said his goodbyes to Anderlecht, signed for the Bhoys and is now wishing farewell to his international boss.

Schmeichel had a close relationship with Hjulmand and paid tribute to him on Instagram this morning, stating: “Thank you for your immense dedication, passion and inspiration, which you have given to all of us.

“Your leadership and the great memories we created together will never be forgotten. I wish you all the best in your next chapter. You have undoubtedly made your mark on Danish football.”

The 37-year-old will soon meet up with his Celtic teammates in the United States as Brendan Rodgers prepares the team for three friendlies against DC United, Manchester City and Chelsea.
