Nick Hammond resigns from Celtic
Celtic Head of Football Operations Nick Hammond has resigned.
The news came in the last hour, with the former Reading man deciding to “pursue new opportunities”. A statement from the club read:
“Celtic Football Club today announced that Head of Football Operations, Nick Hammond, has resigned from his position at the Club to pursue new opportunities.
“Nick joined Celtic in 2019, having previously held Director of Football and Technical Director positions at Reading FC and West Bromwich Albion FC respectively. He leaves with the Club’s best wishes.
“Celtic Chief Executive Peter Lawwell said: “We would like to thank Nick for his contribution to Celtic across the past two seasons. Everyone at the Club wishes Nick the very best for the future.”
Shock timing as Nick Hammond leaves Celtic
The much-derided Celtic transfer guru has been met with criticism this season. Celtic spent big in the summer transfer window, but 10IAR has not been achieved.
Hammond, as head of recruitment, has been blamed for the failures of Vasillis Barkas and Shane Duffy amongst others. However, with Celtic signing Liam Shaw and pursuing deals for young talents, it seemed Hammond still held influence at the club.
It’ll be fascinating to see what the club do next. This could pave the way for an announcement of a Director of Football. In any event, it’s a massive surprise in terms of timing. He joins Scott Brown, Peter Lawwell and Neil Lennon in the list of names who are leaving, or have left the club since January.
