Nir Bitton ready to earn his Celtic spot after injury hell

Nir Bitton’s return to action at Celtic couldn’t have been more timely.

Celtic are currently without several big first-team operators in the midfield. The likes of Olivier Ntcham, Callum McGregor, Ryan Christie, and Tom Rogic are all sidelined. In terms of options to work alongside Scott Brown, Celtic are currently struggling for alternatives.

Therefore, when Bitton made his first start over a year against Motherwell, his influence was much needed. The Israeli went on to have impressive performances at Hearts and Hibs, with Celtic winning all three games he’s started in.

There’s no denying that Bitton would’ve ideally not as played as much over the last 10 days. But, speaking to the Celtic View (Volume 54, Issue 32, page 19), Bitton confirmed he’s ready to get going for the club once again.

“Life is good but my legs feel terrible. It’s good to be back and great to be playing these last few games.

“We have some injuries in midfield right now, so I need to make sure my body is ready. My match-fitness is improving all the time, so I’m ready to do whatever the management staff ask me to do.

“In the Hearts game it was much better. My body felt better so I’m happy with how things have progressed. It’s good to be back on the pitch and getting my career going again.”

Is Bitton more than a temporary solution?

Bitton’s displays since the winter break have been positive. He may have only had three starts, but he’s actually had seven appearances in total including four substitute outings.

The Israeli’s passing has still to pick up in terms of sharpness. He’s been guilty of several loose balls, particularly in the matches against Hearts and Hibs. But given the tenacity and high-tempo nature of those encounters, you can hardly blame him.

It’s difficult to see how Bitton keeps his place in the team beyond the return of Ntcham, Christie, and McGregor. All three are surely higher up the pecking order than the former Ashdod man.

Of course, the change of manager may be a positive for him anyway. After all, Neil Lennon was the one who signed him back in August 2013. He’ll know all about his qualities and what he can bring to the team.

But bigger battles await Bitton. How he copes when the returnees are back remains to be seen.
