No approach from Celtic for Carlos Borges despite City Football Group links

Celtic are not in for Manchester City teenager Carlos Borges right now, according to a report.

The attacker’s name has been on the lips of many Celtic supporters so far this summer, even though there has never been a concrete report linking us with him.

As we covered yesterday, the name of Borges and Young Boys midfielder Fabian Rieder have come about primarily due to word of mouth. It’s been a funny old start to the window.

However, now we do have something a little more substantial on the former, even if it’s not what many of us wanted to hear.

The reliable Mark Hendry from Football Scotland is reporting that “no proposal or approach” has been made by Celtic for the hot Portuguese talent.

There is nothing else of note in the report but it all seems pretty definitive. The club haven’t made a move for Borges at this stage, despite online chatter.

One of the major causes of the Borges chat has been Celtic’s relationship with the City Football Group, and in particular Manchester City.

We have signed a number of players from the European champions in recent years. Jeremie Frimpong, Jason Denayer and Patrick Roberts are just three examples.

With current head of recruitment Mark Lawwell having real ties to CFG — something we’ve seen already this summer with the signing of Marco Tilio from Melbourne City — there is a sense that it’s a matter of time before Celtic dip their toe in the water again.

But it doesn’t appear to be with Borges. Chances are you’ll know a properly viable report when you see it.

In the meantime, we’ll keep you updated with what’s going on.
