“No ceiling”; Luis Palma’s former boss thinks he has already been improved by Celtic

A former manager of Luis Palma, German Burgos, believes the sky is the limit for him at Celtic.

Like everyone else, Burgos has been impressed with Palma’s performances in the UEFA Champions League. He came so close to scoring against Lazio, with VAR very narrowly ruling it out, before netting a stunner at home to Atletico Madrid on Wednesday night.

In total, he’s scored three goals and provided a lovely assist in his first eight appearances.

Burgos, who also served as assistant manager under Diego Simeone at Atletico for years, reckons he has already improved at the Bhoys from his days at Aris.

Celtic’s Luis Palma ‘will reach the highest level’

Speaking to The Sunday Post [29/10 print edition], the former Aris FC boss said: “Luis Palma is already better than he was at Aris. He has evolved and understands now the importance of being professional because it is not enough just to be good on the pitch.

“I tell you something, if Luis Palma scores against Atletico again in the next game, they will go looking for him. He’s already scored once, if he does it again I am sure they will try and get him. There is no ceiling with Luis. If he continues to improve, he will reach the highest level.

“This tournament is the best there is in football on Earth. If he continues with that humility, the sacrifices he has made which characterises him and playing as well for his team, he will rise higher. Good players stand out in all leagues and, in the current league, it is very important. What happens in Scotland is that they get spotted and move on, but the Scottish league is very important too.”

It’s still early days for Palma at Celtic but the signs are positive. He has poise in the big moments and his goal against Atletico was evidence of that.

The key for him now is stringing together consistent form over weeks and months. If he can become a regular goal-scorer or creative presence in the final third then Celtic fans will quickly embrace him as a favourite.

At that point, we can start thinking about his long-term future. For now, it’s just thrilling to see him make a big impact in the team. It was needed after Jota’s exit.
