There would have been no irony lost for many Celtic fans if they’d happened to have come across a social media from Middlesbrough on their latest signing Paddy Roberts.

The mercurial talent, who sealed a six month loan move to the English Championship side yesterday, played all of his best football in Glasgow. We knew that. And it appears his new employers do too.

As Boro took to Twitter on Thursday evening to give their fans “a closer look” at their latest recruit, many Celtic fans wouldn’t have been too surprised to see the findings in their short highlights reel.

They featured goal after goal from the Manchester City man. Skills and fancy flicks too. But despite him also having recent loan spells at Girona and Norwich, as well as starting his career at Fulham, every single moment featured him in a Celtic shirt.

Hopefully Roberts finds a new home at Middlesbrough

There’s no doubting that Boro have a player there if they can just help him re-find the form of his ‘Invincible’ season at Celtic. Roberts really came into his own under Brendan Rodgers that season but has struggled to find any sort of consistency since. He needs a club to love him again.

As far as we’re concerned, it’s quite nice that his future won’t concern us – this month at least. We’ve already been linked with other former stars like Victor Wanyama and Filip Benkovic and, while signing both would be nice, it’s also good to look forward and not back.

There’s no doubting that we could do with another right-wing option. Marian Shved clearly isn’t in Neil Lennon’s plans at this stage and that means we’re far too reliant on James Forrest. The winger has been excellent for 18 months but he has his flaws too, and often goes missing in big clashes.

It’s important that we strengthen that area. Even if it’s with a young loan signing like Roberts was not so long ago.
