Northern Ireland still hold Martin O’Neill in special regard
O’Neill transformed Celtic after arriving in 2000. He delivered major silverware, restored belief around the club and built a side supporters still speak about with enormous affection.
And after returning to the club twice on an interim basis to save Celtic this season, the national association let their admiration for O’Neill be made public.
The Northern Ireland message captured that feeling perfectly. It was simple, respectful and a reminder of how important O’Neill remains to so many Celtic fans.
Celtic success under O’Neill went beyond trophies
At 74, Martin O’Neill schooled the likes of Hearts’ Derek McInnes and Rangers boss Danny Rohl in his way to a league and Scottish Cup double.
That is why Northern Ireland’s message resonated so strongly online. It was not just recognition of trophies.
It was recognition of a manager who brought success to Celtic supporters in one of the club’s most turbulent seasons of this century.
