Brendan Rodgers has spoken to the media today as Celtic take on Rangers in the Premier Sports Cup final this weekend.

Build-up is advancing ahead of Sunday’s showdown at Hampden, and there have been plenty of pre-match fireworks to keep supporters occupied.

Coming out swinging, Brendan Rodgers slapped down Philippe Clement regarding Celtic’s finances after the Belgian claimed they were in a different league to the reigning Scottish top-flight champions on that front.

Although there is a certain historical irony to the situation, football on the pitch is the main concern with the Premier Sports Cup up for grabs.

Providing some light relief, Alistair Johnston should be fit to feature against Rangers after Rodgers ruled that his hip flexor concern against Dinamo Zagreb doesn’t look to be detrimental.

Now, the 51-year-old has delivered a classic response when asked about the Bhoys’ potential to break a certain trophy record this weekend.

Brendan Rodgers on Celtic’s potential to break trophy record

With both sides locked on 118 major honours, Celtic could move ahead of their rivals this weekend by claiming the prize at stake.

When pressed on the topic earlier today, Rodgers made it clear that trophies are the clear priority at the club rather than shouting about statistics should his side get over the line.

He stated: “Not really, not for me. For me it’s about the game, it’s winning about the trophy. We want to win as many trophies as we can.

We don’t necessarily have to tell everyone. We just want to win and win well and then hopefully get into our next game and look to the next trophy.”

Celtic quietly focused on the task ahead against Rangers

Despite questions surrounding the historical context of what Sunday’s clash at Hampden could mean for Celtic, Rodgers only appears to be focused on navigating the task at hand.

Ultimately, there is no point in entertaining scenarios where a trophy is won. Right now, both sides are poised for a mouthwatering clash at the national stadium, and the eventual winner will need to work hard to push silverware over the line.

Celtic have made name for themselves in the field of doing their talking on the pitch. Anything said pre-match will go out of the window come kick-off time this weekend.
