Having nothing to lose gives Celtic freedom against Valencia

Celtic have nothing to lose against Valencia tomorrow night, and can play with freedom in Spain.

Brendan Rodgers has often stated he wants his players to be brave on the European stage.

There have been games were Celtic have been rank underdogs before, but they came with their own pressure.

Down 2-0 after a defeat at home, Celtic’s European adventure appears to be over for another year.

Of course, the Bhoys won’t want to suffer another heavy defeat in Europe like they have in previous years.

However they enter the game with one foot already out of the competition. They can play with freedom and that may propel them to cause a shock upset.

Here’s the thing – Celtic can cause Valencia trouble with their attacking talent. It isn’t crazy to imagine Celtic being able to score in the Mestalla.

Their big problem, especially in Europe, is concentration at the back. Almost every goal Celtic lose in European Competition comes from a defensive error.

With nothing to lose, the defenders can afford to be that bit braver in possession away from home.

Celtic’s task is a considerable one. They must overcome a 2-0 deficit away from home. They will in all likelihood exit the Europa League by end of play on Thursday.

However if they are going to cause an upset, they will have to produce their best ever performance under Rodgers.

European competition is an area where some fans question the mentality of Rodgers. Some would like him to take a more pragmatic approach in terms of defending against better teams.

Even in the game considered his best, Rodgers has watched his teams lose multiple goals.

A stunning display against Man City saw three goals shipped. Despite leading three times on the night, Celtic had to settle for a point in the Champions League.

You never know, Celtic

Celtic are in a good place domestically after they extended their lead in the league to eight points at the weekend.

The treble treble is within touching distance now, and a European run was always going to be a bonus.

However, in Spain Celtic will enjoy a rarity – they will play with freedom for the first time in a long time.

They should enjoy it, because it may be the last time for a while.
