Celtic’s latest and most grotesque transfer saga came to a close on Tuesday with the news that the club had pulled out of a deal for David Turnbull. The Motherwell teenager was highly sought after at Celtic Park but excessive demands ended a potential deal.
The club have ended their interest in the 15 goal man and will instead turn to other options this summer. But do we actually need to sign a midfielder?
Well equipped
Turnbull was the kind of target that the club simply had to move for. Similar to Scott Brown and Stuart Armstrong, the youngster was one of the real top emerging players to come out of the Scottish game. It would have been severe negligence if we hadn’t have made a move.
The deal didn’t come off and now Neil Lennon may be tempted to sign another midfielder to ease the pain. However, the fact is that we’re pretty well covered in the middle of the park.
Scott Brown, Callum McGregor and Ryan Christie are all top level players who can excel both domestically and in Europe. Nir Bitton and Olivier Ntcham (if he stays) offer good back-up options while Tom Rogic and Ewan Henderson can play further up the pitch.
Eboue Kouassi and Youssouf Mulumbu are also still at the club although neither is expected to have much of a future.
Ntcham issue
Our need for a central-midfielder revolves around the future of Olivier Ntcham. If the Frenchman departs the club this summer then we should look to bring in a new player capable of challenging for a first-team spot.
If Ntcham stays then we’ll be left with six or seven good players vying for three spots. That’s healthy competition.
