Odsonne Edouard looks to improve for France U21s, named in first-team

Odsonne Edouard is set to start his second consecutive game for France U21s tonight.

The U21 Euros continue in earnest, with France having succumbed to a shock defeat in their opening fixture. It’s a much-changed side from that match, with Edouard leading an attack featuring Amine Gouiri and Romain Faivre. Meanwhile, Camavinga has dropped out, with Lille’s Boubakary Soumaré in to face Russia.

The Celtic talisman may be 23, but he qualifies based on his age from when tournament qualification began. That’s why many sides in the Euros have more than a handful of players aged over 21.

France’s squad is certainly experimental. The likes of Mattéo Guendozi and Wesley Fofana won’t feature against Russia’s U21s, with France-based talent largely being preferred for this second group match. Eddy will be hoping to emulate Jonathan Afolabi’s U21 heroics, with the Celtic youngster reviving Ireland’s chances against Wales on Friday.

Odsonne Edouard will be looking to improve

Edouard has been linked to every club under the sun in 20-21. His contract runs out in 2022, and given his goalscoring exploits, it’s little wonder other clubs are interested.

That said, though, Eurosport reported that interest has cooled. If the Frenchman is looking to make an impression and ramp up his value, this tournament is huge.

Given the interest in top youth prospects, plenty of scouts from elite clubs will be watching. If not to watch their own club’s players, then to see who’s making an impact. Edouard has reportedly sought a move from Paradise over the last year, so he needs goals and fast.

Despite the immense criticism lobbed his way this season, Odsonne Edouard has still impressed. In the context of being injured and then catching Covid-19, 16 goals in 26 league games is pretty great [Transfermarkt]. Against Russia, though, more eyes could be on the Celtic striker.

Over to you, French Eddy.
