Odsonne Edouard reassures Celtic fans

Odsonne Edouard’s response to worrying transfer links on his future have been reassuring for Celtic fans.

Last night, the big Frenchman was linked with a potential £30million-move to Serie A side Napoli (Daily Mail). Considering he’s hot on the heels of his four goals for France under-21s, you can see why interest in him has been picking up.

However, Edouard stayed at Celtic beyond the summer transfer window, which closed on September 2nd. Therefore, you can see why any transfer links just over two weeks after it closed would be frustrating for supporters.

Thankfully, Edouard himself has come out and reaffirmed his commitment to Celtic. Speaking at his press conference in comments picked up by the Daily Record, here’s what he had to say:

“I actually didn’t know about this (the report) and it doesn’t really matter. At the moment I’m a Celtic player.

“I’ve got a season to play, I’ve got a long contract, I’m really happy with the way I’m playing, the set-up here and I’m really happy to play with my friends for the team.

“The main thing at the moment is I’m a Celtic player and I’m happy to be a Celtic player. I’ve still got a lot to prove with Celtic, as part of the Celtic team. There’s a long season ahead of us, we need to concentrate on that.”

A powerful response that will go down well with the supporters

This is an emphatic statement from Edouard, and it should be music to the supporters’ ears. Any £21m-profit on him will have to wait.

Granted, we all know the time will come when he departs for pastures new. He will fully deserve his big move when it does arrive, and even right now, it still seems likely that next summer could be when he does leave.

However, this should hopefully put to bed any idea that he will leave the club in January. It would’ve been a lot more difficult for Celtic if he was making noises about moving. Just look at what happened in the end with Moussa Dembele.

But at the moment, you can see Edouard is enjoying his football, and is keen to add to those 10 goals he’s scored for club and country this season. That’s a huge boost for Celtic, and puts them in a great position this January.

Then again, we all know the name of the game. If Napoli come in with a mega-money bid, Celtic will likely accept – particularly if it’s record-breaking.

But at the moment, speculation is all last night’s report is. Edouard isn’t keen on leaving, and Celtic aren’t keen on letting him go. That adds up to a healthy position for the Scottish champions to be in.
