Odsonne Edouard and his brilliance for France under-21s yesterday has certainly gone down well with the Celtic supporters.
In what was a must-win game for the French at the under-21 European Championships, they secured a vital 2-0 success against Iceland. It’s a victory that sends them to the knockout stages in May where they’ll face off against the Netherlands in the quarter-finals.
That means Edouard and his France teammates are now only three wins away from winning the competition. It could be a big achievement for French Eddy, who also bagged a penalty against Russia in the second group stage clash.
But last night he produced his moment of the tournament so far. Latching onto a superb through ball, Edouard ran in on goal and lofted an exquisite chip beyond the Icelandic goalkeeper.
It’s big news for Celtic at the same time. With Odsonne away for the crunch fixtures this summer, it gives us an additional opportunity to see his value rocket even higher. As much as scouts would’ve been tuning into the three games France played in the groups, there will be heightened interest in the latter stages.
Odsonne Edouard has a big summer ahead with France under-21s
Some of the potential fixtures this summer look blockbuster too. The likes of Germany, Spain, Portugal, and Italy are all involved in the latter stages. If Edouard shines against these sides, it’s only going to be a boost for Celtic.
Of course, there is another question to be answered here. Some Celtic supporters will be frustrated at the fact Edouard hasn’t shown this level of quality for the Hoops consistently. How he can bag 17 goals in 13 games for France under-21s yet go on a barren run of two goals in 11 games earlier in the season for us is frustrating.
But all we can do is look towards the future. Edouard will likely be off in the summer and it’s now all about maximising his value. Considering his contract situation, we need any leg-up we can get here.
And the quality of his goal last night was certainly eye-catching. That’s the kind of flair that will attract increased attention.
Below, we take a look at the reaction to his sumptuous effort from an admiring Celtic support:
Strap him to a chair and don’t let him out until the transfer window is over. One more season, one last dance 🍋 https://t.co/Iu6SKNMeHW

Where will Odsonne Edouard be playing next season, I hope it's Celtic but more likely to be someone like Leicester who can make him a multi millionaire before he even proves his worth! It's going to be horrendous trying to replace him no matter how much money the new manager gets https://t.co/16cu9UiW51

He’s a joke.
Enjoy him being here because he will go on to better things. https://t.co/MHT5dcFkjP

Been quite enjoying the meme that Edouard is 41 years old and still playing with the youths but that really is a great goal. Pass and finish. https://t.co/wVDpUV2bFt

Imagine if we had someone who could play that pass to him first.

If it was Celtic
“Throw in to Laxalt, to brown, back to Ajer….. over to Kenny. Back into Brown who switches it over to Laxalt. Plays it into Mcgregor… who finds Brown, back the way to Ajer”
