Oliver Burke has come out and defended Scottish football, and stated that certain players at Celtic are better than his old Bundesliga rivals.
Burke of course signed for Leipzig in a record-breaking deal worth £13million. It was the highest ever transfer fee for a Scottish player. Yet it also gave Burke the chance to test his skills against the Bundesliga’s best.
And, since moving to Celtic, the on-loan West Bromwich Albion star hasn’t seen any decrease in quality. Burke is full of praise for the likes of James Forrest and Callum McGregor in particular.
Speaking in the Evening Times ahead of tonight’s match against Valencia, Burke stated that he hasn’t played with anyone in England or Germany who are better than some of Celtic’s top stars.
“I think they [McGregor and Forrest] are very much under-rated when you look at the Scottish boys.
“Scottish football is sort of looked down upon, I don’t know why. Some of the boys in the Celtic squad I am now playing beside have better quality than what I played with in Germany or in the Premier League with West Brom.
“I see it. But I guess everybody else has to watch us play and realise how good the quality is we have in our team. Then they will know.”
Nail on the head from Burke
Celtic’s loan hero is absolutely spot on with his assessment here.
Despite the fact the likes of Forrest and McGregor have produced incredible performances against the likes of Manchester City and Bayern Munich, their club is still looked down upon down south in particular.
And the Scotland internationalist is right to point out that those detractors clearly don’t watch Celtic. McGregor has already made 51 appearances for club and country this season. Forrest, on the other hand, has earned 44.
Those numbers don’t add up if they didn’t have real quality. And even if Burke is saying his team-mates are better than the likes of Marcel Sabitzer and Bruma, it shows the confidence he has in them.
Forrest and McGregor, in particular, shouldn’t take the praise lightly. It’s a serious compliment that Burke sees them at that level.
Tonight, all of Celtic’s heroes will need to show that level of class to see off Valencia too.
