We begin a new series entitled ‘ones that got away’ looking at players who could have played for Celtic, but went on to find success with other clubs. We start the series with a look at Liverpool’s Andy Robertson.
Andy Robertson could go down as the ultimate ‘one who got away’ from Celtic Park. The Liverpool full-back is arguably one of the best players in Europe. Unfortunately, he is not becoming one of the best players at Celtic Park.
Robertson was released by the Hoops when he was 15 years old, and as he told the Daily Record back in 2015, it was a decision that upset him.
“I supported Celtic”
“I was only a boy and I supported Celtic. So leaving at 15 was hard to take.”
However, Robertson was determined to continue his career in the game.
“But I never felt that was the end of my career. I wanted to try somewhere else and feel lucky Queen’s Park gave me an opportunity.”
Grasped the opportunity
Robertson has grasped the opportunity that Queen’s Park gave him. His form for the amateur side took him to Dundee United, then Hull City and now Liverpool and the Scotland captaincy.
No doubt it did hurt Robertson when he was released from the club. It was probably the best thing that happened to him though, as he gets set to play in the Champions League final for the second year in a row.
As for Celtic, it is a case of what might have been.
