Celtic’s goalkeeping situation has taken a few twists and turns recently.

Firstly, the Scottish Sun reported that current Hoops number two goalkeeper, Craig Gordon, told the club that he wanted to leave before the end of the January transfer window.

The story went on to reveal that the Hoops were willing to accept the player’s wishes, but only if a replacement goalkeeper was signed first.

However, that situation seems to have changed. The Daily Record reported that Celtic have turned down an approach form Hearts for the player, and the Hoops are keen to keep him at the club, until the end of the season.

What shouldn’t be forgotten in all this is that Gordon’s Celtic contract expires at the end of the season. At the moment he seems highly unlikely to sign a new deal, especially when he has asked to leave the club.

Celtic do need to keep Gordon at the club as back-up to Fraser Forster, so their attitude towards the player is understandable.

However, the Hoops should also be looking for a replacement for Gordon, and possibly Forster, whose loan deal from Southampton is up at the end of the season.

One player who Celtic should be considering signing as a replacement, either in the next 48 hours or in January, is Motherwell goalkeeper Mark Gillespie.

Gillespie has been in excellent form for the Steelmen this season, and has collected 15 clean sheets in 29 games. That is one of the man reasons that Motherwell have been so successful this season.

However, his contract is up at the end of the season. That is a situation that Celtic should be monitoring very closely.

Club needs to sign at least one goalkeeper

The Hoops will need to sign at least one goalkeeper in the summer you would imagine. With Gordon and Forster’s futures in doubt, Neil Lennon will need to add another goalkeeper to the squad.

Gillespie could be that player. What Neil Lennon and Nick Hammond will have to decide though, is if to make a move for the player in the January window, or wait until the summer.

That might well depend on if the Craig Gordon situation changes. Even if it doesn’t, Gillespie is a player who should be on Celtic’s transfer radar.

Celtic haven’t been afraid to sign goalkeepers from Scottish clubs before – look at Scot Bain for example. Therefore, there is no reason for the Hoops not to at least be interested in the player.
