The debut of Celtic defender Stephen Welsh took almost everyone by surprise today.
Named in Neil Lennon’s team for the first time, the 20-year-old looked composed and assured in his first outing.
He didn’t put a foot wrong, defending resolutely and passing well out from the back. If you can cover those basics at Celtic you’re on sure footing towards improving and securing a regular game.
One player who could follow him into the team in the second half of the season is midfielder Ewan Henderson.
His current status
A name much more familiar to Celtic fans after bursting onto the scene last term, he’s now something of a forgotten prospect after spending the first part of this season out on loan at Ross County.
He was recalled to the Hoops on the same day as Welsh and if recent reserves side footage is anything to go by, he’s showing the kind of ability that could make him a hit in the senior side.
Already impressing again
Celtic posted highlights this weekend of their recent win over Huddersfield Town through the week and it’s Henderson who stands out, showing the kind of drive and creativity that could thrill fans.
One of the best moments comes on the 3:41 mark when Henderson receives the ball on the halfway line and carries it all the way to the opposition box despite being matched in his run, before setting up Cameron Harper to score.
YouTube user ‘agfi188’ said of the video: “Hendo stands out like a sore thumb.”
Another fan, ‘AJSC’, replied in the comments: “Henderson very impressive. Looks to have added a bit of steel and power, get him back in the first team.”
Clearly he is catching the eye again and if his coaches think similar, then it could be back into senior action for the 19-yar-old.
With the manager opting to change formations in different matches there could be a way for Henderson to fit in more going forward.
Lennon seems to be utilising quite a fluid 3-5-2 system right now, meaning Henderson could be given more freedom in the second half of matches from the bench, much in the way Tom Rogic impacted the match against Hamilton.
Henderson played five times for the club in 2018/19 and created three assists in the process (Transfermarkt), so we know he has the ability in the final third.
He’s unlikely to have been recalled from the Staggies for no reason, like Welsh, so here’s hoping he can now push on and take the next step in his Celtic Park career.
