Who remembers the build-up to the 2016 Scottish Cup Final between Rangers and Hibs? Very few people. The reason for that – Celtic stole the limelight a mere 24 hours before the game by announcing that Brendan Rodgers was to become the club’s new manager.
That was a great example of Celtic stealing the headlines in a quiet week for the club – the Hoops’ season has finished by then, and thoughts were turning ahead to next season.
Celtic have the perfect opportunity to do something similar this week, and steal the headlines, ahead of Rangers’ Europa League game against Bayer Leverkusen.
New deal would thrill Hoops support
Of course, the Hoops are out of Europe, and face a free week ahead of Sunday’s Glasgow derby. However, a new contract for Odsonne Edouard, for example, would allow the Hoops to get plenty of media attention and would thrill the Hoops support in what is meant to be a quiet week for the club.
There is no doubt that all at Celtic would much rather the club was in Europa League action this week instead of the Hoops having their first free midweek in a long time.
That is in the past, but the disappointment will no doubt crop up again when Rangers are in action on Thursday.
A new deal for Edouard would allow the Hoops support to forget about that, and focus on the good instead, which is what a new contract for the prolific striker would be.
Bonus heading into derby
It would also be a real bonus for the Hoops heading into the game at Ibrox on Sunday, it would give everyone at the club a lift.
Only time will tell if Celtic decide to make a headline grabbing move this week. Perhaps the club will decide to keep things quiet ahead of the trip to Ibrox.
Still, the chance is there for Celtic to grab the headlines, and a new deal for Edouard would certainly do that.
