Our View: Soro signing may have impact on midfielder’s Celtic career

It seems that Celtic are only a short time away from announcing their second signing of the January transfer window.

Neil Lennon has disclosed that the move for Bnei Yehuda midfielder Ismaila Soro should be completed in the next couple of days.

Interestingly enough, Soro is a central midfielder, a position which the Hoops are not lacking in players in. As Soro is 21, he could be at Celtic for a long time to come, that will no doubt be the hope for Neil Lennon.

It will be intriguing to see how Soro’s arrival at the club will have an impact on the midfielders currently at the club, in particular Callum McGregor.

Can take player’s place in side from time to time

For a start, it will be hoped that Soro will be able to take McGregor’s place in the first-team from time to time.

The arrival of Soro should hopefully mean that McGregor no longer tops the list of the most minutes played in world football.

What also might have to be taken into account is Leicester City’s interest in Callum McGregor. The Premier League side, who are managed by former Hoops boss Brendan Rodgers, were, as reported by the Daily Record, willing to pay £20 million for the midfielder in the summer transfer window. However, they were informed that the player was not for sale.

Former Hoops boss is ‘huge admirer’ of midfielder

A recent report in the Daily Record claimed that Rodgers remains a ‘huge admirer’ of McGregor, but that at the moment he isn’t looking to sign another midfielder.

Perhaps in a year’s time, if Soro has performed excellently for the Hoops, then the club would consider selling on McGregor for a huge fee. That would be a smart piece of transfer business.

In the immediate future though, Soro will want to get used to playing for the Hoops, and hopefully make some apperances before the end of the season.

Next season will be the time to properly judge the player, and what he adds to the team.
