Owen Moffat rocks up at surprising Scottish club one year on from Celtic departure

Former Celtic youngster Owen Moffat is looking for his next club.

The 21-year-old departed the Hoops for a move to Blackpool almost exactly a year ago. Moffat signed a three-year deal with the English lower-league side, joining up with their development squad. (Blackpool)

After featuring on three occasions for Celtic during the 2021/22 season, it was hoped that he could make a big impression down south.

However, it seems very much like he’s now on the hunt for first-team football as he finds himself currently on trial with Hamilton Accies.

The Scottish Sun say that Moffat featured for Accies in their bounce match against Rangers on Wednesday. The attacker even netted, though his side went down to a 4-2 defeat.

The Lanarkshire side now find themselves in the third tier of Scottish football although they do top that division as the only side with a 100% winning record so far this season.

However, it is still surprising to see him rocking up at a club outside of Scotland’s top two divisions. Given the promise that Moffat showed on occasion at Celtic, you may be forgiven for thinking that he could do a little better than John Rankin’s side.

After all, he did come on in our League Cup final victory over Hibernian in 2021, even if we did have a lack of options at that stage.

Perhaps a youth-trusting club like Accies is exactly what Moffat needs at this still fairly early stage of his career.

Sometimes young footballers need to fall to rise again. It would be great to see Moffat competing at Premiership level in years to come, even if it’s against Celtic rather than for us.

We’re still tipping that to be the case.

In other news, good signs for Rodgers and Celtic as we all prepare for a different feeling this weekend
