Pat Bonner identifies the Celtic star who just ‘keeps performing’ despite outside perceptions

Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers will be delighted with his side’s collective resilience last night against Aberdeen on an evening where they ground out a statement victory.

Supporters will have witnessed better matches in terms of quality, but weighting up significance, the Bhoys’ 1-0 win at Pittodrie may go down as one of their most pivotal results of the campaign.

When you factor in the adverse weather conditions present in the North East, it makes the win all the more impressive. Brendan Rodgers has brought personality to Celtic, but their dogged nature has also shone through over the last few months.

Now seven points above the Dons at the Scottish Premiership summit, there looks to be a long way back for anyone willing to try and swipe the title from under the champions’ nose.

Relying on a squad-wide contribution has been central to their dominant start to the campaign, and Pat Bonner has picked out the player he thinks deserves more credit for his contribution.

Pat Bonner on Greg Taylor’s contribution to the Celtic fold

Speaking on Sportsound, Bonner shone a light on Greg Taylor after his assist against Aberdeen in an impressive second-half substitute appearance, claiming he just ‘keeps performing’ despite external suggestions that Celtic could upgrade in the left-back position.

He stated: “Yeah, he has. Listen, people were saying Celtic need a left-back and the guy keeps performing and coming in.

“He might go off it a little bit, most players do, but they have now Valle that’s come in on loan obviously, but is complimenting him when he’s not maybe just at, he can bring him in, obviously, adding to the left-back position.

“He gets it; he plays that inverted full-back role as well as anybody because he’s always on the move, he’s always looking for the ball, and he’s always getting the ball too.”

What Brendan Rodgers has said about Greg Taylor’s contract

Last month, Rodgers addressed Taylor’s Celtic contract situation as the full-back runs into his final months contracted to the Scottish Premiership champions.

The Irishman said: “I don’t think there’s anything close, but I repeat, it’s definitely something I want to do, but I have to respect both sides on that. From Greg’s side, from the club’s side, from a managerial side, I really want him to stay here, and I really hope we can do everything we can to keep him, but I also respect Greg’s position.”

After his excellent contribution last night, you have to suspect that securing his future will become an important priority for the club over the coming weeks.

Taylor has been a fantastic servant and offers consistency in the left-back position. Losing him would be a sore one to take.
