When the dust settles on Celtic’s draw with Club Brugge in the Champions League, looking back at the result, most fans would agree that a point was a fair outcome of the game.
Celtic struggled to get to grips with Brugge and get a foothold in the game and even when Brendan Rodgers’ team went behind, the Belgians were deserving of their lead.
Brugge did to Celtic what Celtic normally do to other teams and pressed the life out of the game and was very quick on the counterattack.
Thankfully, Daizen Maeda produced a bit of magic to earn Celtic a precious Champions League point but it wasn’t before Pat Bonner spotted what the Parkhead crowd did just before the Japan international’s goal that he said was ‘hilarious’.
Celtic Park groans were answered in a ‘beautiful’ way by Daizen Maeda
On BBC punditry duty for the big game, Bonner said he heard the crowd start to get frustrated with Maeda about ten seconds before his brilliant finish.
Bonner told BBC Sportsound [6m 30s], “The beautiful thing about it, boys, was that the crowd was so frustrated with him just right before it, but he stopped and turned back and gave the ball back to him.
“Then suddenly he came alive and scored the goal. That was a great way to answer that frustration.
“It was hilarious.”
TNT Sports confirm Bonner’s remark and Joe Hart’s reaction to Celtic goal vs Club Brugge was class
To prove just what Bonner meant, the highlights posted on TNT Sports show the commentator confirming the crowd’s impatience with Maeda in the build-up to the goal.
And just for good measure, listen out for Joe Hart’s superb instant reaction the second the Japanese winger draws Celtic level.
The match commentator said, “Now Maeda, awaiting help. The space closed off. And you can hear sometimes when the atmosphere can work against you.”
Hart’s reaction is that of a true Celtic fan. Superb from the Hoops hero who still holds the Parkhead club close to his heart.
Celtic are now on eight points with three games left to play. As it stands right now, Celtic sit in the unseeded play-off places four points ahead of PSG who are in the elimination places.
If Celtic can get a positive result at Dinamo Zagreb and then a win against Young Boys at Parkhead, qualification from the league phase will be guaranteed with one game spare to play.
